Only 2% reported a period of self-destruction in 2009. It was equally divided for those who maintained or retreated during 2009.

Takeaway: If one can grow during a economic meltdown, then you are going to love 2010… as things improve! Unleash your marketing power. Those who took a wait and see strategy in 2009 may have enabled their competitive colleagues to goow, as their marketing influenced more people who turned to visibility thereby avoiding those who were out of sight, out of mind.

When it came to having a Coach/Mentor, it was nearly equally divided between having one and not having one. 47.4% to 42.1%. Guess what? We did a cross-tabulation between this question and the first question… yes, those who grew in 2009 had a Coach (99.3%), those who were stagnant or declined in 2009 did not have a Coach (99.7%). 7.9% have a Coach but are looking for a new one. 2% think they need one and interestingly… not a single Chiropreneur reported they didn’t need a Coach.

Takeaway: The difference between growth and stagnation is the role of a Coach/Mentor. The most successful CEO’s, athletes, and performers understand the role of their Coach/Mentor and often have more than one… for specifics aspects of their aspirations. Your current Coach may be great in motivation, but you are not growing as fast as you would like… get a marketing Coach. Just as you may need different legal counsel over the years from business, labor, divorce, criminal or tax attorneys, you may need a different Coach for the various components in your practice and in your life. But, a Coach you need!

Related to question one, in 2009 52.8% reported an increased in collection, while 42.1% reported a decline. 2.8% no change (stagnaton) and 2% uncertain. Cross-tabulation between this question and the second question confirmed the value of a Coach to the rise or fall of the practice. But, our concern is with the 2% who did know…. we believe that you cannot have a successful practice if you don’t know the numbers. You must track and monitor your key indicators so you can make better decisions. Not knowing the numbers is an indication of poor leadership. This needs to be the BIG…

Takeaway: Track your numbers DAILY, so you can make better decisions to grow and not stagnant or decline.

Taking a look at the pre-tax results in 2009, 42.1% reported an increase and a decrease! 5.3% reported no change and a whopping 10.5% did not have an answer! Those who reported an increase in pre-tax profit are getting poor tax planning advice… get a new CPA! Those who reported a decline in pre-tax profit, need to increase collections to improve margins.

Now, if you read this carefully, you would point out that we are giving opposite advice. Yes and Yes. As you grow your practice, you want to reduce your taxable liability so that you can reinvest your hard-earned money into the practice for further growth. If you are not seeking growth, then you want to manage your overhead to increase the value of your practice when it is time to retire. But, again, it is the 10% who had no clue about their taxable liability for 2009…. if you re making your required tax payments, you should know if you are up or down. And, if you don’t know, it is too late to correct. The plane has taken off, empty seats and all. April 15th is going to hurt.

Takeaway: Tax planning is an important component for growing a practice. Depending on your objectives, you need to manage the flow of taxable income in order to leverage your resources for your desired outcome. Instead of giving the government 38% of your taxable income, zero would be better if you desire to grow the practice.

For the sake of focus, we are reporting the TOP 5 marketing initiatives implemented in 2009:

1. Web Site 65.8%

2. Yellow Page 50.0%

3. Email 50%

4. Outside Lectures: 44.7%

5. Public Relations 42.1%

Of note is that four of the top five are passive marketing and only one is confrontational marketing. Strategic passive marketing requires more initiatives to achieve comparable results from confrontational marketing. In 2010, we recommend that you incorporate more confrontational marketing in your mix in order to maximize the results from your marketing efforts.

Takeaway: Greater emphasis on the implementation of controntational marketing over passive forms of markeing and greater balance of internal marketing and external marketing.

In 2009, the majority of Chiropreneurs maintained the same marketing budget from the previous year, 38%%, 34.3% increased their budget and 28.#% decreased their marketing budget.

Takeaway: A marketing budget needs to be adjusted based on your desired outcome in the current year. If you want to grow, then your budget will need to be adjusted based on the projected growth, not what you did last year. This is the biggest mistake made in budget planning. The budget required for a $200,000 practice is different than what is needed for a $500,000 practice.

Fully, 44.7% of you maintained your PVA in 2009 over 2008. In other words, you continue to deliver the same level of care year in and year out. 28.3% increased their PVA and 21.1% decreased from the previous year.

Takeaway: If you are not growing each year, you are rotting. Slowly getting ready to fall to the ground. As the leader of your business, it is your first responsibility to IMPROVE the practice continuously. Never get stuck in a rut, otherwise it is the first step toward decline. Stagnation is not success. Growth is the basic strategical decision all Chiropreneurs need to embrace. You cannot shrink or stagnant to greatness. You cannot be the dominate brand of choice in your marketplace if you become lazy. What are your plans to improve your PVA in 2010? You better have one or someone in town will be eating your lunch.

New Patient Production rose in 2009 with 42.1% of the Chiropreneurs reporting; 34.2% declined and 21.1% stagnant; 2% just don’t get it.

Takeaway: 55.3% underperformed in 2009 because… they were not making appropriate changes in their strategies or tactics to blunt the impact of the economy. In other words, spotting the stagnation or decline as early as possible would have been a red flag to a leader to make different decisions, do things differently, do more, bigger, bolder and better. Reasons or Revenue: Pick one you cannot have both.

The majority of Chiropreneurs, 34.2%, reported a Case Average of $1,001 to $1,500. 2% have a Case Average of $5,000 or more! 28 % reported under $1,000; 15.8% $1,501 to 2,000; 13.2% at $2,001 to 2500; 7.9% at $2501 to 3500.

Takeaway: The bottom line on these results is all about the 6 inches between your ears. It is how you view patient care. It is all about how you communicate and educate your patients. The vast majority, 60.5%, reported a case average of under 1500. Based on these results, most Chiropreneurs are not collecting their usual and customary fee for service. Family plans and free services will kill your practice with death by a thousand cuts. If your case average is below 2500, then you must work harder to attract new patients while your overhead increases and your bottom line decreases.

88.% desire to grow their practice in 2010. That’s should be the objective for everyone who owns a practice. Stagnation and survining are the wrong strategies.

Takeaway: The role of the leader requires fofllowers. You grow the practice when you lead more followers…. patients and staff. Lead or get out of the way.

52.% plan to increase the size of your T.E.A.M. in 2010. President Obama is going to love this report! Not a single practice is planning to cut staff, but, 34.2% have no plans to change and 13.2% don’t know… no vision is not the path to growth!

Takeaway: Planning requires that you have a plan that is congruent with your desired outcome. You cannot expect to GROW your practice with any great degree if you did not plan to grow the T.E.A.M. to account for the growth. In other words, you must connect all the dots. Desired income to budget to players.

57.9% will increase their marketing budget in 2010. 31.8% keep it the same as 2009; and 10.9% just don’t know. Enuf said.

Takeaway: You cannot multiply zeros. If you want to maintain the practice in 2010, then you can keep your same marketing budget. If you want to grow over and beyond what you achieved in 2009, you need to increase your marketing budget. You should know which you want to do, and plan accordingly.

Nearly half of you don’t have an Associate, 47.4%, 21.1% have at least one and 21.1% would like to add one in 2010.

Takeaway: If you do not have an Associate, you have a job, not a business. Without an Associate you MUST go to the office everyday in order to generate income. As a solo practitioner, you spend most of your time working IN the practice and not enough time working ON the practice. Hence, little or no growth.

81.6% will not relocate their offices in 2010. 13.2% plan to relocate and 5.3% are uncertain. NOW is the best time to upgrade your location and office…. as you can get really great deals from landlords…. from tenant improvements to very competitive lease rates. Last week, a Chiropreneur doubled the size of his office for the same lease payment! If your lease is on month to month…. you can get a new lease and cut your cost in most cases or you can find space with better visibility, parkting, and space for little or no increase in your current cost.

Takeaway: The best time to relocate is NOW. The best time to extend or renew your lease is NOW.

The top three services offered are Chiropractic, Orthotics, and Nutrition followed by Back Care Products, Rehabilitation and Massage.

Takeaway: This should give you something to ponder when you make decisions about what to offer in your practice.

In terms of perception of a chiropractic franchise…. it is so evenly divided that no conclusion can be reached. It is neither positive or negative.

Takeaway: Legal issues aside, the one benefit of a franchise is branding. A brand of 1,000 is better than the brand of one.

44.7% believe the future in chiropractic is positive; 7.9% see the future as negative (get out); 15.8% see it as neither negative or positive; and a whopping 31.6% are UNCERTAIN.

Takeaway: It is hard to grow and lead your practice, and the profession, to greatness when you are negative, neutral or uncertain. You must have certainty to grow a practice.

Here’s the top THREE ways to get new patients:

1. Web Site 36.8%

2. Public Relations 34.2%

3. Yellow Page 28.9%

Outside Lectures (23.7%) and External Screening (21.1%) closely followed the leaders.

As we predicted last week, we believe yellow page advertising will play less of a role in your new patient production, as most people are turning to the internet to locate a provider. Web site can be a source for new patients, if the web site is properly promoted… people must visit your web site before it can have an impact. The two that will provide you with the fastest and most predictable results are External Lectures and External Screenings.

Many of you suggested Referrals as the best source of new patients. We intentionally left referrals off the list for a very good reason. Everyone wants that to be the best way to grow a practice and it can be. But, each time we do an audit and the presumption was that most new patients come from referrals either of two conditions exists:

1. It is not true. Auditing the source of patients usually reveals that referrals occur, but more new patients come from other activities than from referrals.

2. The office does zero marketing, so naturally the source of new patients is referrals. That’s not a good marketing plan.

Takeaway: A successful marketing plan will have four external and four internal marketing activities executed each month.

The number one aspect for growing a practice was MARKETING: 31.6% Followed by Strategic Planning, Practice Management and Leadership at 10.5%. Marketing is what drives the growth of all practices… including marginal growth or poor marketing. Significant growth requires good marketing. It’s that simple. But, if you lack leadership and practice management skills, you can impact your PVA negatively once a new patient tries your brand of chiropractic for the first time. Marketing cannot replace the “personality” of the practice.

Takeaway: Have a well-crafted, solid, resource supported marketing plan for optimum growth in 2010, fofllowed by delivering an exceptional experience on each and every patient visit.

A written marketing plan was prepared by 65.8% of the participants! And, 13.2 don’t know. No and Maybe at 10.5%

Takeaway: There is no excuse for not having a written plan. It is important that you know what you plan to do in 2010, month by month, and what your projected outcome is… or you are just checking out and hoping you grow. Hope is a lousy business strategy.
